Turner, William (1920-2013)

Although Turner belonged to a group of Northern industrial painters, influenced by LS Lowry, he followed a very personal vision of the industrial landscape he encountered.

Specifically influenced by what he saw in exhibitions in Manchester, particularly German and French expressionist works. Turner’s pictures often used vivid colours to depict otherwise grim and imposing buildings and structures he saw around him. Also, he often made his buildings sway and lean thereby bringing a sense of aliveness and movement to otherwise static subjects. Mostly overlooked during his career, Turner’s work is now sought after and his contribution to Modern British art properly recognised.
