Alexander, Matthew

(b 1943 -)

Matthew Alexander was born in Maidstone, Kent in 1953 and is the son of Chris Alexander (1926 - 1982), himself an accomplished painter.

Matthew studied at the Canterbury and Maidstone Colleges of Art and also at the University of London.

After a teaching career in Margate, he decided to concentrate on his own painting career from 1981.

His style has been described as being 'deeply rooted in the great tradition of European landscape painting'  and his work is highly regarded as being a continuation of the line of British Impressionist painters, whose numbers include John Constable and Edward Seago.

Matthew has exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy, The Royal Watercolour Society, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The Royal Society of British Painters.
