Boycott-Brown, Hugh RSMA
(1909-1990)
Boycott - Brown was born at Bushey, Hertfordshire in 1909. He learned to paint with his father, the watercolourist Allan Robert Brown, who was art master at the Royal Masonic School. Several other members of the family were artists, including Hugh’s brother Michael.
Boycott Brown was educated at Trent College, Derbyshire, Walford School of Art and Heatherly's, also studying under Bernard Adams and Sir John Arnesby Brown R.A. He was appointed art master at The Royal Masonic Junior School Bushey in 1929. Elected into the RSMA, he began exhibiting with the Omell Gallery of Albemarle Street, London.
He spent as much time as he could painting in East Anglia, where he became friends with William Henry David Birch (1895-1968) and John Alfred Arnesby Brown (1866-1955), both of whom greatly influenced his work.
During the Second World War he served as an Intelligence Officer, working in India, South Africa, Burma and Northern Ireland, and after the war returned to teaching, purchasing a cottage at Blakeney, Norfolk, so that he could continue to paint the Norfolk coast in his spare time.
He exhibited in East Anglia: at the Phoenix Gallery, Lavenham, at the Deben Gallery, Woodbridge, and Reade's Gallery, Aldeburgh. In 1970 he retired to Knodishall near Saxmundham in Suffolk, where he continued to paint right up until his death in November 1990.
