Somerville, Stuart Scott

(1908-1983)

'Somerville painted mainly in oil, his subjects being flowers, landscapes, still life and figures and his work is known for a vibrant and colourful palette. 

Born in Arksey, South Yorkshire in 1908. Son of artist and collector Charles Somerville. Studied art with his father, and then self-taught.   His sisters Peggy Somerville and Rosemary were both successful artists.  Aged 17 he exhibited at the Royal Academy.  In his early 20s he travelled to East Africa where he explored and painted and recorded the British Museum Expedition.  He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1925-1961.

He lived and worked in Suffolk from 1945 – until his death from cancer in 1983.
