Horses and Cart on a Country Lane
signed H.C. Elvery and dated 30.1.1922 (illustrated).
Oil on canvas
Despite the clear signature, we have yet to find any biographical details about this artist.
The work would today probably be categorised as an example of ‘Naïve Art’ which is generally taken to mean work created by artists with little or no formal artistic training. The Naive style can sometimes suggest a childlike simplicity and can also seem to ignore the accepted conventions of scale, proportion, perspective and colour combination and reveal a certain stiffness in relation to figures and animals.
The location depicted is also a matter for speculation, with suggestions including Kent, England because of the shape of the oast houses, and Scandinavia due to the design of the farm house.
The painting has benefitted from a recent light clean and is in good condition.
