Dzubas, Wilhelm (Willy)
(1877-?)
Following the trend in the USA, 1920s architectural design in Germany and Austria increasingly saw the skyscraper as an icon that signified prestige, modernity, and urbanity. Posters of the period were keen to reflect this and artists were comissioned to design images accordingly.
One such leading artist was Wily Dzubas who was particulalry noted for his stunning Art Deco posters depicting historic monuments and buildings in Berlin. Dzubas images were extensively used by the German Tourist Information Office and featured bold architectural designs embellished with stylish details of urban chic - classic cars and smartly dressed people walking in an elegant foreground.
However, by the 1930s the mood had changed dramatically, Berlin was no longer a safe place for many including Dzubas who escaped to London where he remained until his death.
